This often-quoted line was in fact written by Colonel Benjamin Bonny in the mid-19th century. He was a British military officer who was serving in India at the time, and he later took his own life after being court-martialled. However, it still does have meaning for soldiers around the world. The saying is about maintaining a soldier’s dignity while performing duties that are difficult or unpleasant.
